IBM Developes Solar Energy Solution
05/19/2008:
IBM has developed a way to make concentrated photovoltaic cells that are more efficient in converting the sun’s energy into electricity. The technology is based on the on technology used to cool computer chips. The main principle behind the technology is to use a large lens to focus light onto a relatively small piece of photovoltaic semiconductor material and thus using only fraction of the semiconductor material. The solution involves placing an ultrathin layer of liquid metal, a compound of gallium and indium, between the two surfaces.
