India’s Boxing Olympic Medal Hope Still Alive

Akhil Kumar’s Olympic boxing medal dream came to an end on Monday after lossing to Moldovan Gojan Veaceslav 3-10 in his 54kg quarterfinal match. Now its up to Jitender Kumar (51kg) and Vijender Kumar (75kg) who will be fighting in their quarterfinal matches on Wednesday. All three boxers come from Bhiwani, a Haryana town which is supports by London-based steel magnate Lakshmi Narayan Mittal .

Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal during the 2008 Summer Olympics for 10 meter air rifle event. This also marked the first ever individual Olympic gold medal for India in 108 years. India last won a gold during the 1980 Olympic Games for Hockey. Now it will be Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal turns to go for the gold. Saina Nehwal stunned fourth seed Chen Wang of Hong Kong to move into the quarter finals of the women’s singles badminton.

Sania Mirza Retires Hurts In Her First Round Match In The Olympic Games

Sania Mirza had to retire hurt during her first round match in the Beijing Olympic Games because of a wrist injury. Sania was trailing Czech Iveta Benesova 1-6 1-2. The injury could also force Sania to miss her doubles first round match tomorrow. Sania is scheduled to play along with her partner Sunitha Rao against the French pair of Tatiana Golovin and Pauline Permentier. Top seed, Ana Ivanovic also had to withdraw from the single match due to a thumb injury. American Lindsey Davenport also pulled out of the singles and Maria Sharapova did not even make the trip to China becuase of her shoulder injury.

The US basketball team wrapped up their final exhibition game with a win over Australia 87-76. Now they will be heading to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics . The US basketball team was undefeated during their exhibition games but will have some tougher games during the Olympics. Dwyane Wade scored 22 points and LeBron James .

The 2008 Summer Olympics will consist of 302 evebts in 28 sports with over 10000 Athletes participating. The 2008 Summer Olympics have been in recent news with nations calling for boycotts due to some people being upset with China’s involvement in the crisis in Darfur. Other concern related to environmental and health issues in and around Beijing have been raised due to the concern that it may potentially effect athletes health.
