Sania Mirza Retires Hurts In Her First Round Match In The Olympic Games

Sania Mirza had to retire hurt during her first round match in the Beijing Olympic Games because of a wrist injury. Sania was trailing Czech Iveta Benesova 1-6 1-2. The injury could also force Sania to miss her doubles first round match tomorrow. Sania is scheduled to play along with her partner Sunitha Rao against the French pair of Tatiana Golovin and Pauline Permentier. Top seed, Ana Ivanovic also had to withdraw from the single match due to a thumb injury. American Lindsey Davenport also pulled out of the singles and Maria Sharapova did not even make the trip to China becuase of her shoulder injury.

Maria Sharapova will take part in the Wimbledon this year but will have a new look. The 21 year old tennis superstar was seen in 2004 singles champion wearing a diamond encrusted outfits will now wear shorts for this years Wimbledon. Maria won the Australian Open in January and is favoured to win the Wimbledon. She will first face Stephanie Foretz from France as her first opponent at the Wimbledon. Maria is not a top seed which has been given to Serbian Ana Ivanovic .
India’s Sania Mirza , 32nd seeded, will face Colombia’s Catalina Castano, 148 in WTA rankings, in the first round and should find it easy to move on to the next round. Sania is trying a comeback after her surgery which has put her out early in the DFS Classic in Birmingham and The Ordina Open.

If she wins her first round match she will then have to face the Ana Ivanovic , world’s no 2 and Australian Open runner up. Other tennis stars taking part in the Qatar Open include Maria Sharapova , Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, Nadia Petrova, and Venus Williams .

Sania Mirza won her first round match against Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-1 to advance to the second round at the US Open tennis championships being played in Flushing Meadows, New York. Sania will face 60th ranked American Laura Granville in the second round. Sania had her best Grand Slam showing back in 2006 US Open where she advanced to round of 16 and was defeated by Maria Sharapova of Russia.

Venus Williams beat 6th seed Ana Ivanovic Friday to move to her sixth Wimbledon final. Venus has already won three Wimbledon title and will either play top seed Justine Henin or Marion Bartoli. Venus had already beaten 2004 winner Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach here.
